How to install FirstClass on your home computer
• You will need an Internet connection
• Log onto the Internet
• Open your web browser
• Go to http://www.firstclass.com/clientdownloads/
• Select the operating system your computer is running
• Follow screen prompts for installation
• After the installation is complete
• Click the Setup button
• Your Server setting should be mail.franklinlakes.k12.nj.us, all else remains the same
• Login and get your email

How to Login
• Open the FirstClass Client Application
• Type in your first initial and the first 5 letters of your last name and then your password. Select login.

How to open and send an email message
• Double click on the mailbox icon to see your mail. To open a message, double click on it.
• To send an email click on the first icon on the toolbar (it looks like an envelop) or go to Message -> New Message. Fill in the subject and name boxes and add your text. When you are done you can do spell check (Edit -> Check Spelling ). To send the message click on the first icon on the top toolbar, the second icon will send your email and close it at the same time, or go to Message-> Send or Send and Close.

How to unsend a message
• The third icon on the top toolbar is a postmark with a curved arrow. First highlight or open the email you wish to unsend, then click on the unsend icon or go to Message -> Unsend.

How to create organizational folders to save mail
• To create folders you need a place to put them, so make sure you have created a split screen (right side of top toolbar select View > split, choose Horizontal. You now have an empty window above the window that will show your email messages.)
• To create folders Select file (top toolbar) -> New -> New Folder. You may rename the folder at this time by typing the name of the folder (September, October, Principal, Lessons Ideas, etc.)

How to reply to mail (setting reply preferences)
• After opening an email you may respond to it by clicking on the Reply or Reply Special icons on the top, or going to Message -> Reply or Reply Special.
• Sometimes you will receive email messages that have been sent to more than one person. When replying consider whether it is necessary to reply to everyone or if your reply is only important to the sender of the original message. If you only need to reply to the sender go to Message and select Reply Special > Reply Sender.
• You can set your default to Reply to Sender by going to the Preferences from the menu bar and selecting the Messaging tab and then select Reply Sender in the Reply preference.

How to attach, open and save attachments
• To create a message with an attachment select the paper clip icon or go to File -> Attach. This will open a dialogue box. Find the folder or document you wish to send, double click it and it is now attached to your message.
• To open an attachment from a message sent to you, double click on it. If you want to save an attachment to a particular location, go to File-> Save Attachment.

How to customize your own address book and mail lists
• Go to File -> Open -> Address Book or click on the Address Book icon on the FirstClass desktop.
• To add an address of someone not in the Franklin Lakes Directory click on the New Address icon or go to File-> New-> New Address. Fill in pertinent information.
• To create a mail list click the Mail List icon or go to File-> New -> New Mail List. Type the name of group and add members by dragging them from the Address Book list or typing in names and hitting the return key after each one.

Or
• Alternately you can add names from the directory by clicking on the small icon to the right of the Name field. A directory list will appear.
• Highlight a name you want to add to the mail list and click select. This adds the name you highlighted.
• You can add several names by holding down the apple key and clicking on the names you want to include.
• Close window, when asked to save, click SAVE. Now you have a new mail list.
• Names may be deleted from a mail list by highlighting them and pressing the delete key.

How to use the District and building bulletin boards
• To send a message to the District Bulletin Boards, address the email to the appropriate group. [CRS Bulletin Board, HMR Bulletin Board, WAS Bulletin Board, FAMS Bulletin Board or for all staff address it to District Bulletin Board.

IMPORTANT: You must always be logged on to the Internet to check your email through FirstClass from home.

How to use FirstClass from a web browser
• Go to the address box on your browser. Type in: http://mail.franklinlakes.k12.nj.us
